During these 12 weeks of summer, Pastor Bob is preaching a series called
“Exchange: Lifestyle,” exploring chapters 12-16 of the book of Romans. I divided it up into daily readings and have committed to daily journaling my reflections about each.
Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another.
Today’s verse is similar to yesterday’s, except it’s talking about a mutual love, rather than focusing on personal responsibility. The word for love here is phileo, which is definitely about reciprical, mutual love and familial affection. It’s about enjoying the relationships God gives you in the family of God. It’s the love that says, “I got your back!”
We are to have an eagerness to show honor to each other. The New Revised Standard Bible puts it best, “outdo one another in showing honor.” It reminds me of two people at the restaurant door, each inviting the other to go through first. Such action apparently is what Paul’s talking about.
In a world that’s obsessed with “me,” today’s verse reminds us that Christian love is a lot about “we!”
