Reflections on Romans 14:10a (Thu)

Today’s passage:

14:10a But you who eat vegetables only – why do you judge your brother or sister? And you who eat everything – why do you despise your brother or sister?

This brief passage returns to the same two ideas (judging and despising) from verse 3, referring to those who have different opinions on gray matters. The repetition seems to be a restatement to make the point stronger. Revisiting it may indicate the church’s need for having the proper attitude about those who differ.

Interestingly, here he asks a question: why? Perhaps this is to make them look inward at their attitudes and expose their pride. A proper view of others is critical in the Christian life.

Paul might have also asked why to remind them and us that these are gray areas not clear areas from the Bible.
